Certified Coach – Level I

“Coaches and players can say anything they want, but if they don't back it up with performance and handwork, the talking doesn't mean a thing."

Michael Jordan

My love for volleyball began at a very young age. My aunt was head coach of the biggest high school in my hometown (Moline, IL) and I loved going to the gym with her and working out with the high schoolers from the time I was ten. I started playing competitively in Junior High, and made the varsity squad as a freshmen at Alleman High School in Rock Island, IL where I started for 4 years. I played club as an Outside Hitter for Iowa Rockets.

I went on to play volleyball for Greenville College in Southern Illinois, a Christian college about 40 minutes from Downtown St. Louis, MO.  While there, I grew as a player and also grew in my faith. I played as a Defensive Specialist starting out my freshmen year and by the end of that season I was seeing time as an Outside Hitter. I started for the next three years as an Outside Hitter, joining my team at the NCAA Tournament and being recognized as the Conference Tournament MVP in 2010. My team topped the Saint Louis Intercollegiate Conference (SLIAC) all four years I was there. I went on two mission trips with the team to the Dominican Republic and also to Cancun, Mexico where we put on clinics for young volleyball players and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.

While at Greenville, I had the great fortune of coaching club volleyball for Panther Volleyball Academy (formerly known as Gravity Volleyball Club)from 2009-2013 at both the Junior High (13’s, 14’s) as well as the High School Levels (15’s, 16’s, 18’s) each season. I was the Assistant Club Director from 2013-2016, planning and running practices for 44 athletes (4 teams) at a time. I can run a gym am great at maximizing touches and reps and utilizing practice space efficiently to ensure that players are not standing around, as well as ensuring each child gets individualized feedback through training my coaches thoroughly. I also ran the club tournaments put on by PVA during these years, leading coach’s meetings before the tournaments began, posting scores, and making brackets. I was Assistant Camp Director between the years of 2010 and 2016. Panther Volleyball Academy Summer Camp is one of the largest overnight volleyball camps in the Midwest, training over 300 athletes in a one-week period.

A standout player I had the honor of coaching is Kristen Torre who went on to play at Division I Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where she broke numerous school records as a Middle Hitter and later went on to play professionally overseas in Germany.

After undergrad I assisted with practices for the Greenville College Panthers after graduation, from 2013-2016 while I was in graduate school earning my doctorate in physical therapy. I also did recruiting for Greenville College Volleyball around the St. Louis area as well as various tournaments and National Qualifiers.

Most importantly, I am a follower of Christ and my relationship and walk with Him is very important to me. I currently work as a Pediatric Physical Therapist in Southaven.

The top three priorities in my life are:

1. Faith.
2. Family and Friends.
3. Volleyball.

The top three coaching priorities are:

1. Helping to create young women of strength and integrity, on   and off the court.
2. Creating a team culture that feels like family.
3.  Winning!

The principles that I always stress are:

• It’s not about you.
• 100% effort, always.
• The importance of love in a team.

I will never compromise on:

• Team dynamics. Don’t ask me to choose between you and the team, I’ll choose the team every time.
• Sportsmanship. We will smile and shake the other team’s hands and thank the official the same way after every match, win or lose.
• Enthusiasm. Nobody should ever know whether we are winning or losing from looking at us, we should be upbeat, happy, and positive no matter what.

I expect the following from my players:

  • Come to compete for you spot every time you hit the floor.
  •  Servant Leadership.
  • Respect your coach, your parents, your teammates.

If you want to play for me, expect the following:

  • To be loved, and part of that is being able to correct you in a loving way.
  • To be respected enough to expect the best from you always.
  • To learn essence of the game, not just how to play it.

Coaches I would like to emulate:

• Tom Ackerman (My college coach)
• Russ Rose
• Karch Kiraly

The athletes I would like my players to emulate:

• Misty May-Treanor
• Kerri Walsh-Jennings
• Logan Tom
